Do Clear Aligners Give you a Lisp?

A question we get from patients is do clear aligners give you a lisp? Every orthodontic appliance has the potential to affect your speech. A clear aligner is no different.

You may notice a slight lisp during the first few days of wearing your first set of clear aligners. However, this is only obvious to you and is temporary. A lisp caused by an orthodontic appliance can easily be corrected.

Do Lisps Resolve?

Yes, lisps can go away and will go away while wearing clear aligners. But it’s also likely that you won’t have to worry about a lisp. It is on record that over 93 percent of patients using clear aligners should not experience issues with their speech.

According to a study, users of clear aligners did not experience any speech issues within their first 3 – 6 months of treatment, and acclimatization to treatment starts during this period.

However, this is the timeframe where you may notice emergent speech slurring and lisping, should it occur.

Fluent speaking is essential in life, and even if you encounter problems with aligners during public speaking, you can rest assured with the understanding that they are temporary.

Adjusting To Clear Aligners

Your tongue and mouth need to learn how to make sounds while wearing clear aligners. Adjusting to clear aligners is very temporary.

Once you get used to wearing aligners, whatever speech defect you experience will begin to resolve on its own.

Lisps and speech impediments could be caused by clear aligners that are not correctly fitted to your teeth. In this case, you’ll have to contact your dentist to check your aligners and ensure that they are the right fit.

Can A Lisp Be Fixed?

Yes! A lisp can easily be corrected. Usually, the problem resolves itself within a few weeks. Naturally, your tongue should become more acclimated to the clear aligner trays.

It is also important to note that if you’ve encountered speech development and pre-existing lip issues, then clear aligners may be the perfect tool for them.

Most lisps are caused by structural irregularities in the mouth leading to poor tongue displacement, so dealing with the malocclusion could mean resolving those issues and the lisp.

Of course, all of that depends on the kind of lisp you are dealing with. There are four kinds of lisps:

  • Decentralized lisp: This occurs from the tongue pushing against the front teeth
  • Palatal: This happens when the language presses against the roof of the mouth
  • Interdental: This is caused by the tongue pushing between the spaces in the front teeth
  • Lateral: This occurs due to uneven tongue airflow

The palatal lisp may require more extensive procedures. Others can be fixed with clear aligners.

If your lisp fails to resolve itself, your orthodontist may recommend some speech exercises or refer you to a speech-language pathologist for extensive therapy.

Can Clear Aligners Give You A Permanent Lisp?

No two patients are the same, but generally, any lisp caused by a clear aligner should not last more than a few weeks. Speech exercises can help expedite how long your lisps last before it resolves.

With regards to speech impediments, removable clear aligners are more corrective. If you are anxious about your aligner-related lisp lasting forever, we advise you to relax your fears. The lisping is temporary.

Consider it a stepping stone to a rewarding, straightened dentition later. However, if, for some reason, long-term issues persist. So, you must try these exercises and consult a licensed orthodontist ASAP. They can refer you to more comprehensive speech therapy.
